Here’s my set of advice on how to lead a happier, less-conflictive life:
TOLERANCE
Be tolerant of other people’s opinions. Just because you disagree with them, it doesn’t it mean that they are “ignorant” or “need to be educated.”
RESPECT
Be respectful of other people’s right to express themselves however they see fit. For the record, them being accidentally (or even voluntarily) offensive, doesn’t give you carte blanche to call them names, or spread lies about them (except for Daniel Tosh. That guy is a dick).
MATURITY
Be mature enough to walk away from arguments that just have no point. You say you want your dashboard to be a “safe, comfortable place”? Warm and cozy? Like a womb maybe? Let me quote my very handsome, and successful animation teacher “The people on the internet who spend a bunch of time writing about the things that bother them on the internet are normally weirdos who have nothing better to do.” *
Just because it’s there, it doesn’t mean you have to read it. Same way I ignore everything Daniel-Tosh-related.
EMPATHY
Be aware of the fact that you don’t own a patent on feeling sad. Yes, that middle-class, handsome, white, abled, straight, cisgender male has problems too. However, you shouldn’t not be a dick to them just because maybe their mom has cancer. You should not be a dick to them just because you shouldn’t be a dick to people.
LOGIC
This is the fucking internet. You are not going to change the world by being rude to random strangers on the internet who happen to not care about your very specific problem.
IN CONCLUSION
Here’s the thing: We’re all here, and we’re all unhappy, and we’re always going to be unhappy. It’s the human condition. Yes, some people have it worse than others, but I assure you: If you have time to go around making long arguments, and threatening people to “unfollow” them because they said Joel McHale literally runs like a girl (which, let’s face it, it’s as true as it’s adorable), it’s because you’re not being forced to work at an Apple factory in China.
Also, you are 17. You’re too young to be this jaded.
* I’m unemployed at the moment, by the way. I AM a weirdo with nothing better to do… sob.
